Veterans Day

In our area Woodstock Post 1026 activities are;

Our community joined us to show their support and say Thanks to our Veterans at the Woodstock Cemetery Ceremony. This year’s ceremony included a wonderful and heartfelt poem reading by Kaila Dedek, a second grader from Bennett Elementary.(See page 7 for poem and photo)
A special thanks to our Honor Guard who looked and performed with true professionalism at the West Hurley and Woodstock ceremonies that day. Thank you Veterans Affairs Director Terri Breitenstein for all your Master of Ceremony work. Thank you Don Haberski Sr. for singing the National Anthem and Abby Graber for singing God Bless America. Thank You to our Town Supervisor Jeff Moran, Councilwoman Terrie Rosenblum and County Legislator Don Gregorious for their words and support.

Thanks to everyone else who was involved behind the scenes to make Veterans Day special for us all.

Last but certainly not least, we wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving holiday. Thank You all for you support to our
Veterans and our Post. We couldn’t do it without you!!

Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, The Honor Guard will be meeting at the Post at 9.30 AM. We will be going to the West Hurley War Memorial for a 10AM Salute, then returning to the Woodstock War Memorial for an 11AM service. At the conclusion of that service we will return to the Post for refreshments. I urge all to attend if possible and visit the Post during the day.

    Veterans DayVeterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day has evolved into also honoring living military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation. A national ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

    "On behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a token of the honorable and faithful service of your loved one."
